Practice Bookkeeper / Accounts Assistant

Location: Christchurch
Salary: £24,570 – £27,000 per annum
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm, with a 1-hour lunch break

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced, proactive and organised Bookkeeper / Accounts Assistant to join our accountancy practice.

The role involves providing bookkeeping and accounting support to the practice and a portfolio of clients, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, VAT, payroll and management reporting.

You will need to work independently, manage deadlines and communicate confidently with clients, suppliers and colleagues.

The ideal candidate will be practical and commercially aware, with the ability to understand the accounts, identify issues and act rather than simply process transactions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing accounts payable and receivable for the practice and clients.

  • Processing invoices, expenses, payments and receipts.

  • Posting transactions using the correct accounting codes and entering manual journals.

  • Completing bank reconciliations and investigating discrepancies.

  • Managing aged debtors and creditors and carrying out credit control.

  • Liaising with suppliers and clients to obtain missing invoices, statements and supporting documentation.

  • Analysing monthly costs and identifying unusual or unexpected movements.

  • Working with Profit & Loss accounts and Balance Sheets.

  • Assisting with management accounts and management reports.

  • Understanding and processing prepayments and accruals.

  • Maintaining the fixed asset register.

  • Processing payroll.

  • Preparing straightforward VAT returns and Self-Assessment tax returns.

  • Assisting with routine Companies House matters, including confirmation statements and director appointments/resignations.

  • Answering incoming telephone calls and dealing professionally with clients and suppliers.

  • Providing general bookkeeping and accounting support across a varied portfolio of clients.

Experience & Skills

Essential:

  • Strong bookkeeping experience.

  • Experience with Sage Cloud.

  • Good understanding of double-entry bookkeeping and financial statements.

  • Experience with bank reconciliations, credit control, aged debtors and creditors.

  • Experience with VAT, payroll, journals, accruals and prepayments.

  • Good understanding of Profit & Loss accounts and Balance Sheets.

  • Good attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Strong communication and organisational skills.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience working within an accountancy practice.

  • AAT or other relevant accounting/bookkeeping qualification.

  • Experience preparing management accounts.

  • Experience with other cloud accounting software.

  • Experience working with multiple clients and varied industries.

The Person

We are looking for someone who is proactive, reliable and takes ownership of their work.

You should be comfortable speaking to clients and suppliers, chasing information when necessary and investigating issues rather than simply passing them on.

Most importantly, you should have a good understanding of how the numbers fit together, be confident working with accounts and be able to spot when something doesn't look right.

This is a varied role within a busy accountancy practice, offering the opportunity to work across a broad range of bookkeeping and accounting activities.
